5 tips to consider when renting a cabin in Auckland and the rest of NZ
Apr 15, 2024
Are you looking to rent a cabin in Auckland or elsewhere in New Zealand, but you’re not sure where to start? We’re here to help!
A growing number of New Zealanders who need extra space or somewhere to stay short-term are choosing to rent a cabin. In Auckland and the rest of NZ, rental cabins are becoming increasingly popular as a way to help people to live in their desired areas and save on expensive rentals and housing.
Renting a cabin is simple, however there are some important factors to consider. Here are 5 tips to remember when searching for your perfect rental cabin, whether you’re in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Christchurch, Southland or Northland (or anywhere in between!).
1. Pick the Right Size
When choosing the right cabin rental, you’ll need to keep in mind how much space you have available – the last thing you want is for a cabin to show up and it won’t fit! Check what size rental cabins are available in your area, and make sure to measure out where you’ll be placing it. (Our team can help with this!)
RoomMate Cabins come in a range of sizes: standard (3.6m x 2.4m), large (4.x2m x 2.4m) and in some locations, extra large (2.6m x 4.8m). Check out our cabins here.
2. Be Winter Ready
Winter is well on its way, so you’ll want to make sure to rent a cabin that’s not only comfortable but also keeps you warm and dry. Whether you’re using it as a home office, an extra bedroom, or even an event security hub, it pays to choose a cabin that’s insulated to residential standards.
All RoomMate Cabins are fully insulated to a residential standard with batts in the walls and ceilings, and underfloor insulation. They’re also fitted with good quality carpets and curtains!
3. Check Rental Periods and Deposits
It’s important to find out what the minimum rental period is and if there is a deposit required before delivery. You’ll also want to ask what conditions are related to the deposit before locking yourself into any contract (i.e. will you have the bond returned).
At RoomMate Cabins we have a minimum rental period of 6 months. The deposit or bond amount varies by location, and is returned to you after your cabin is collected and we’ve checked it’s in the same condition as when it arrived.
4. Check Delivery and Permits
Think you’ll need a cabin sooner rather than later? There are multiple rental cabin providers in Auckland and the rest of NZ, but you’ll want to find out how long the delivery process will take, if there’s a delivery fee and if you’ll need a permit before it arrives.
RoomMate Cabins can deliver a cabin pretty much anywhere, and you can expect it to arrive within a few days depending on availability. The delivery fee varies according to region, and covers bringing the cabin to your property, placing it on site, levelling it, and removing it when it is no longer required.
Keep in mind, RoomMate Cabins are delivered on custom-built tipping trailers, so we reach tricky sites that others may not reach. We can also use a Hiab (truck mounted crane) at an extra cost, if required.
All our cabins are under 30sqm and have no water connections, so no permit is required for residential use.
5. Review Savings Available
We know the cost of living is at an all-time high for Kiwis, so renting a cabin can be a more affordable option. There are multiple ways you could save on cabin costs, such as the delivery fee, the minimum rental period, and if any type of funding is available when looking at cabin providers.
RoomMate cabins are approved suppliers of portable accommodation by Work & Income NZ and can easily provide you with a quote for WINZ. We also run delivery specials from time to time! Get in touch with your local RoomMate Cabin provider today.
