In the winter months, when the sun isn’t shining so much and there’s a lot more rain about, keeping your home and cabin warm and dry is really important. It’s a much nicer space to be in when it’s cosy, warm and dry!

We’ve got a few tips to help you keep your rental cabin healthy during the colder months.

RoomMate Cabins are insulated to help retain heat inside, and because it’s a smaller space they are quick and easy to heat.

Essentially to keep your cabin healthy, keep it warm and dry, and air it out.

How to get fresh air in your cabin

On those beautiful sunny days (or when there’s no rain), open up your cabin windows and door and let that fresh air in. Fresh air eliminates odours, dries out the interior of your cabin, and removes stale air.

Avoid leaving wet clothing to dry in your cabin. Damp and wet clothing can cause a lot of extra condensation inside the cabin leading to dampness. Damp air is a lot slower to heat than dry air – so keep damp/wet gear outside. Try drying your washing outside or under a shelter – a portable
clothes drying rack is great for this.

How to heat your cabin

A small electric heater or an oil column heater is all you need to heat your cabin efficiently. Having them set to a certain temperature means that you won’t overheat your cabin and reduce your power bill. An automatic timer can also be useful so that when you get home, your cabin is toasty warm  – there is nothing like walking into a warm room in the middle of winter!

PLEASE NOTE: Do not use gas heaters or patio heaters inside your cabin.

Gas heaters that are unflued (don’t have a chimney to the outside) are extremely dangerous to use inside a cabin or house. They produce gases and pollutants that are dangerous to your health. We only recommend using electric or oil column type heaters in your cabin.

Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll stay nice and warm and healthy over the winter months. In the meantime, we’re all looking forward to summer and some warmer weather!
