Exploring our own backyard: The South Island

May 3, 2025

The South Island of New Zealand is home to some of the most amazing natural attractions on the planet. There’s no shortage of incredible things to see and do down south, but some of the most popular sights across the southern regions include:

Nelson & Marlborough

Abel Tasman: Easy bush walks, warm beaches and safe-as swimming make this spot choice for the whole whānau.

Marlborough Sounds: Think quiet bays, boat rides and dolphins popping up to say hi – perfect for a cruisy family getaway.

West Coast

Pancake Rocks and Blowholes: These rocks look like stacks of pancakes and when the tide’s right, the sea goes off like a geyser – it’s nature’s version of fireworks, and it’s free!

Lake Matheson: You can walk around the lake and get a cracker view of the mountains on a good day – no filter needed.

Hokitika Gorge: Bright blue water that looks unreal, plus a swing bridge the kids will think is pretty awesome.

North Canterbury

Hanmer Springs: Hot pools, waterslides, and heaps of space to relax – ideal for knackered parents and kids to have a splash around.

Wine Region: Plenty of spots where you can grab a local wine and a bite while the kids run around and burn off some energy.

Christchurch, Canterbury

Christchurch Tram: A great way to get around town without walking too much – it’s fun for the whole family.

Christchurch Gondola: The gondola takes you up for a wicked view of the city and surrounds!

Mid & South Canterbury and North Otago

Moeraki Boulders: Big round rocks on the beach that look like they dropped out of the sky – good for a wander and a few selfies.

Oamaru Victorian Precinct: Old-school buildings, cool little shops – and you might even spot some penguins waddling about if you hang around until dark!

Otago

Queenstown: The big-ticket spot for bungy jumps, jetboats and luge rides – but don’t stress, there’s plenty to do that won’t cost an arm and a leg!

Lake Wanaka: Absolutely stunning – perfect for chucking a ball around, going for a walk, or just relaxing by the lake with fish and chips.

Southland

Fiordland National Park: Real ‘wow’ stuff down here – towering cliffs, waterfalls, and boat rides that’ll blow your gumboots off.

Stewart Island: Off the beaten track, and you might even see a real-life kiwi having a nosey after dark.
