It’s no secret – Aotearoa has some pretty amazing places to see. The North Island is packed with attractions, from stunning views and local culture to fun things to do with the whānau. At RoomMate Cabins, we’re proud to be Kiwi and love exploring our own backyard. So we’ve put together a list of must-see spots across some of our favourite North Island regions – check them out!
North Shore & Rodney
Takapuna Beach: Great spot for a swim, a feed, and a stroll!
Hike up Mount Victoria: Easy climb with epic views and cool old cannons for the kids to climb on.
Central & West Auckland
The Sky Tower: You can’t miss it – go up to the top for crazy good views or just take a look from the bottom for free.
Piha Beach: Black sand, big waves, and one of the most classic Kiwi beaches.
East Auckland
Half Moon Bay Marina: Chill by the water, grab some fish and chips, and watch the boats cruise past.
Mangemangeroa Reserve: Enjoy a peaceful walk through the bush that feels miles away from the city.
South Auckland
Rainbow’s End: Loads of rides and laughs – perfect for the kids or the young at heart.
Auckland Botanic Gardens: Free entry, amazing plants, and a great place to relax or run the kids ragged.
Northland
Cape Reinga: Stand at the top of the country and see where two oceans meet – magic!
Ninety Mile Beach: A massive stretch of beach you can drive on, fish from, or just lay back and enjoy.
Thames/Coromandel
Cathedral Cove: Famous for a reason – stunning beach with a giant rock arch (bit of a walk, but worth it).
Hot Water Beach: Dig your own hot pool in the sand when the tide’s right – how good is that?
Tauranga
Mt Maunganui: Climb the Mount for a mean view or kick back at the beach with an ice cream.
Glow worm kayaking: Paddle into the dark and see tiny glowing bugs light up the cliffs – like stars in a cave.
Waikato
Hobbiton movie set: Even if you’re not into the movies, it’s a pretty amazing place to check out.
Hamilton Gardens: These gardens are next level – each one’s themed and access is free to Hamilton residents!
South Waikato
Te Waihou Walkway: An easy track with crystal clear water and plenty of fresh air.
Talking Poles Tokoroa: Big, bold wooden poles dotted through town – each one tells a bit of a local story.
Waipa & King Country
Waitomo Caves: Float through glow worm caves like you’re in another world – a pretty unforgettable experience.
Pureora Forest Park: A hidden gem with big trees, fresh air, and quiet tracks to get away from it all.
Rotorua, Taupo & Whakatane
Redwoods: Walk or bike under massive trees – feels like you’re in a movie.
Huka Falls: Beautiful waterfalls that are definitely worth the stop!
Lake Taupo: Beautiful views and loads to do – swimming, fishing, boating, or just lazing in the sun.
Opotiki & Eastern Bay of Plenty
Whakatane River Walks: Easy walks by the water with spots to stop for a snack or selfie.
Ohope Beach: A beautiful beach with gentle waves – great for families and a good sunset spot.
East Coast
Rere Rockslide: Natural waterslide that’s a heap of fun – just bring a boogie board and your brave face.
Maraehako Bay: Quiet bay off the beaten track – great for camping, swimming, and switching off.
Gisborne & Wairoa
Tairāwhiti Museum: A cool mix of local history, art, and things for the tamariki to get into!
Railbike Adventures: Ride a pedal-powered cart along old train tracks through epic scenery.
Taranaki, Whanganui & Ruapehu
Mt Taranaki: Insta-worthy mountain with easy walks or tougher hikes if you’re keen.
Mt Ruapehu: Go snowboarding, skiing, or just play in the snow.
Hawke’s Bay
Te Mata Peak: Drive or walk up for stunning views of the region – awesome at sunrise or sunset.
Wine Tours: Sip your way through local vineyards – or just grab a bottle and park up somewhere pretty.
Manawatu
Wakeboarding Park: Try wakeboarding or watch the pros – great vibes and loads of action.
Arapuke Mountain Bike Park: Whether you’re new or a legend on the bike, these trails are an absolute blast.
Horowhenua & Kapiti
Lake Horowhenua: A lovely, peaceful spot to paddle, fish, or just hang out by the water.
Foxton Beach: Classic Kiwi beach with sand dunes, wide open spaces, and a great fishing spot.
Wellington
Cable Car: Short ride, great views, and it drops you right at the gardens.
Botanic Gardens: Big green space with something for everyone – flowers, art, and space to run wild.
Tararua & Wairarapa
Castlepoint Lighthouse: Epic coastal views and a lighthouse that looks like something out of a movie.
Queen Elizabeth Park: Old-school park with mini trains, BBQs, and plenty of space to kick a ball around.
